"Mr President, I particularly want to thank the Commissioner for his commitment to continuing country-by-country reporting and extending it. I never doubted that commitment, knowing Commissioner Barnier as I do, and I think that I can inform him that he has a public mandate for this role. A survey that I read yesterday said that four in five people say that multinationals which avoid tax make them angry. Three in four people want companies to pay the proper amount of tax. 85% say that it is currently too easy for multinational corporations to avoid tax, and eight in 10 want to see multinational accounts made more transparent and publicly available. We have a mandate, and I think – in the wake of the Starbucks, Google and Amazon tax avoidance scandals – that we do need to act on this mandate.
However, colleagues, I do not want to take away from the victory that we have achieved here today for civil society and for greater transparency, and that is why I would like to introduce Mr Ali Idrissa, who is here from Niger. He is here to watch us take through this historic legislation tomorrow, because it matters. It matters to people in Africa. It matters to people in his country, and I think that we are leading the way globally in making that change."@en1
