"With soaring property prices, expensive energy bills and continuing pressure on social spending, many of my London constituents are painfully aware of the ongoing struggle to find affordable, decent housing in Britain. I therefore commend this report for exploring the undoubted value of the social housing sector in ameliorating the EU's dire economic and social situation. However, while this report does acknowledge my key belief that the provision of social housing is the competence of Member States, it also sets out a number of controversial and worrying initiatives for Member States to carry out in conjunction with the European Commission, with a view to addressing the growing need for social housing throughout the EU. I therefore cannot vote in favour of this report. I find the recommendations for the integration of the Council of Europe Social Charter into EU primary law, the establishment of a European Social Housing Action Framework and the creation of a Social Investment Target deeply concerning, and I believe that these initiatives are quite simply a step too far. Finally, the unnecessary criticism of the austerity measures of Member States cements my decision to vote against this report."@en1
