"My colleagues and I voted against this report. While we agree that housing is an important social issue in Europe, we believe that the provision of social housing falls entirely within the competence of the Member States. Therefore we can not support any calls for initiatives at EU level that, with the best of intentions, could override Member States' independence on the prioritisation of their investment decisions or on a Member State's ability to fund or organise the provision of housing based on their own social needs. It is important that we strike a good balance between EU added value and Member States' competences, and I am very pleased that my amendment on Paragraph 23, which addresses the role of the EU, has been adopted. Unfortunately, a number of paragraphs were adopted that my Group believes set a dangerous precedent by calling for a one-size-fits-all approach in the area of employment and social affairs."@en1
