"I voted in favour of this report as it is an important step for strengthening the EU’s fight against criminal activity. The report is an evaluation of the prevalence of, and responses to, organised crime, corruption and money-laundering by the European Union and Member States. It outlines a multilateral legislative framework for tackling such criminal activity. At EU level, it outlines proposals to develop a judicial and investigative system; notably establishing an EU public prosecutor, harmonising criminal law on money-laundering and abolishing banking secrecy. This is especially important for tackling the prevalence of cross-border offences. Moreover, it provides for tougher measures for perpetrators, whereby companies engaged in corruption crimes will become blacklisted and subjected to a five-year ban on any commercial activity. What is more, any individual convicted of a crime will be prohibited from standing for any public office. In addition, the report outlines legislation to protect witnesses and victims of trafficking. These are all important initiatives but we must recognise this is an on-going process that must be monitored, as criminal activity is a persistent phenomenon."@en1
