"Eighteen months ago I visited the ground-breaking St. Thomas’s Hospital in my London constituency. There I met Reza Razavi, a professor of paediatric cardiovascular science. Prof. Razavi is a cardiac MRI pioneer who performed the world’s first cardiac catheterisation using interventional MRI. Interventional MRI allows for more accurate imaging when performing checks for heart conditions. It reduces radiation exposure to patients and clinical staff and is favoured when assessing the hearts of children and babies who are more susceptible to radiation produced by X-rays. I am pleased, therefore, that the proposals voted on by Parliament today include amendments put forward by my group which will allow an exemption for MRIs. These scanners can continue to be used to perform life-saving procedures like those carried out by Prof. Rezavi. Nevertheless, in the end, I decided to abstain on this report. While I believe that we need to adjust the rules to prevent a ban on MRIs, in principle I think that the EU should only legislate in areas where it can add real value. The EU needs to ensure sufficient flexibility for Member States when it comes to rules concerning workers’ rights, especially legislation in the field of health and safety."@en1
