"It is important that people are fully informed about the food they eat, especially as a lot of products make claims about suitability and nutritional and health benefits. I therefore supported this regulation on food for particular nutritional uses, which overhauls the existing legislation so that it now applies to a more limited group of foods. The report now covers only medical food, total diet replacement foods and food intended for children; other products, such as sports drinks and diet bars, will be regulated under the stricter Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation. I would have liked the regulation to extend the EU-wide marketing ban for infant formula to cover follow-on formula, as the exemption is used by manufacturers as a way to circumvent the strict rules on infant formula. Unfortunately, a total ban was not included in the final report but we did agree to a ban on having pictures of infants on follow-on formula packaging. Overall, I believe this legislation will help to protect consumers from misleading information on food packaging."@en1
