"I welcome moves to protect consumers by putting into place new rules regarding the way in which baby milk and special foods for medical purposes are labelled. In the case of baby milk, it is clearly necessary to make sure that the way in which it is labelled is not misleading for parents who want to make informed decisions about their child’s health. It is for this reason that the labelling of ‘follow on’ formula has been tightened up, and furthermore I support calls from the Parliament to evaluate the nutritional value of other products, such as ‘growing up milks’. I strongly believe that products that carry certain health claims need to prove their benefits under the Health Claims Regulation like all other foods. This will ensure more protection for the consumer and avoid misleading claims on the packaging of products such as sport and diet foods, which are currently able to make claims that have not been backed up by adequate medical evidence."@en1
