"Madam President, it is very important, when you have a legal dispute across different borders, that you have confidence that you have the same level of support from legal aid systems that you would enjoy in your own Member State. At the same time, we have to recognise the differences in our traditions of law. You have the Napoleonic codified law in many continental countries, and in the UK we have a system of common law, based on reason and precedents.
For those reasons, we sometimes have to acknowledge that there are different interpretations of the law, and that what might work in one country may not work with our tradition in the United Kingdom. One of the big problems we quite often have, in the disputes that arise concerning what British people feel about the EU, is to do with that different system of law. If we can understand the different legal definitions and legal histories, then maybe we might ease some of that misunderstanding."@en1
