"I believe it is positive that the committee’s report promotes the role that lifelong learning and education can play in protecting EU consumers. At a time when the single market is becoming ever more defined by the expansion of e-commerce, it is important that people living across the EU are aware of their rights and have the confidence to avail of the wide selection of products and services available to them. It is also right that children are protected from harm in the digital environment. I share the committee’s focus on ensuring that effective tools for resolving online cross-border dispute are in place, as access to these services is crucial to ensuring confidence in e-commerce. I also welcome calls to better inform consumers, including young people, on services within the financial sector. In my constituency, Northern Ireland, many households have fallen victim to the effects of payday loans, which are widely advertised on TV as the answer to solving all your money problems, yet they involve very high interest rates. Better awareness of the potential consequences of these loans is pivotal."@en1
