"Madam President, one of the great things about the single market is the ability of consumers in one Member State to be able to purchase goods and perhaps services in another Member State, and that is one of the great advantages. But the downside to that is when consumers face problems. Unfortunately there have been a number of times when consumers have faced problems, and constituents have written to me about this issue and they have found no system of redress. So it is quite clear that what needs to happen is that there should be better information for the consumers as to where they can turn when there are problems. Of course you can have the bureaucratic hand that mandates certain procedures, but at the end of the day what we need to do is make sure that our consumers who have the information to be able to buy goods and services from across the EU also have the information to know where to turn when things go wrong, working with consumer organisations and others to make sure they are actually looked after. And let us make sure the consumer organisations actually represent consumers rather than spend all their time here lobbying for causes which are often against consumers’ interests. If we can get that right, we can get the right consumer policy."@en1
