"A Uachtaráin, tá an t-ábhar seo an-tábhachtach agus tá sé suimiúil an méid a dúirt an rapóirtéir: dhá rud atá tábhachtach ná, ar dtús, muinín a chothú i saoránaigh agus, freisin, eolas a thabhairt dóibh faoi cad atá á cheannach acu, agus mar sin de.
I would like to make a few points here. In terms of countries like my own and other countries, one of the key ways out of the economic recession is to encourage consumer spending. People are afraid to spend at the minute. Perhaps some do not have the money, but those who have do not have the confidence to do so.
Some of the points made by the rapporteur about encouraging confidence are very important, particularly in relation to online spending. Sixty percent of people are afraid to purchase goods online because they do not have enough confidence in the system and that their data will be respected. We need to work on that. The Data Protection Regulation which is now going through the system will have an important role to play in that regard in encouraging people and giving them the confidence and the knowledge that their data will be respected, and putting them in charge of it
It is very important, as the rapporteur has said, that this is a lifelong process. We should start at a youth level and, just as we have lifelong learning, we also need lifelong consumer protection and advice."@en1
