"I voted for this resolution because I recognise that an effective EU-US trade and investment partnership has the capacity to stimulate jobs and growth. Presently, the combined economies of the EU and the US account for 45 % of global GDP. It is hoped that the negotiations will strengthen both economies and enhance their alliance as leading players in the global economy. If agreed upon, it will stimulate economic activity in a time of prolonged stagnation; it is estimated GDP will increase by EUR 119 billion annually in the EU. Compromise is central to any negotiation process. But there are areas that we cannot compromise on – we must protect our businesses, workers and citizens who are the backbone of our society. Worker and social rights are paramount and must not be used as a bargaining tool. We must also safeguard consumer rights and uphold standards across all areas related to the environment, food, health, data protection and cultural diversity. I believe that cultural and audiovisual services should be excluded from the negotiation mandate. Finally, we must ensure that these negotiations are transparent and that information is relayed appropriately to Parliament. When finalised, Parliament will then have a final say on the agreement."@en1
