"The Syrian crisis shows no signs of abating. Indeed, every time we come to discuss this disaster, the situation seems bleaker. Eighty thousand dead now seems like a conservative estimate, with the refugees and internally displaced persons numbering several million. The plans for combating this epic catastrophe stutter on, but in the meantime we must do everything we can to assist the refugees. The infrastructures of Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, in particular, are by no means perfectly adjusted to receiving a vast influx of people. These countries, combined with Turkey, must therefore be supported with the necessary tools and resources to build adequate facilities for the refugees, which could potentially be used longer-term, should that become necessary. We must lay on special provisions for the many millions of children, in particular, affected by this crisis. The key to future reconstruction lies in offering hope and stability to the children who will build it – so they must be afforded the maximum care, protection and education to guarantee as normal a childhood as the circumstances permit. In the meantime, we continue our calls for an end to this disaster."@en1
