"What began as a popular mass uprising, as part of a wave of uprisings in the region, against the repressive, corrupt Assad-led regime and against high poverty levels and unemployment has descended into an increasingly sectarian civil war. Working people are paying the greatest price for the failure of the movement to develop into an independent movement based on a united working class. Increasingly we are seeing western imperialism and many Gulf States stepping up their intervention in the war by backing the reactionary pro-big-business SNC and FSA. Intervention is also being increasingly supported by capitalist politicians. Humanitarian relief is being cynically used as a cover for military intervention; this is echoed in the resolution. This cynicism was graphically shown by the rejection of amendments that called for increased EU assistance to refugees. Imperialist intervention will not provide a better life for the people of Syria; any intervention will be conducted solely for the interests of these powers. The solution to the conflict in Syria lies in building a movement of working people that demands fundamental change, including democratic workers’ ownership and control of the economy, which could dramatically improve the living conditions of all in Syria."@en1
