"Mr President, I supported this resolution on the situation of the refugees in Syria. We are facing a major humanitarian crisis in Syria, as we have four million refugees – mostly women and children – seeking refuge in neighbouring countries and in North Africa. There are two areas I want to highlight. First of all, I am very concerned about reports of the use of rape and so-called marriages of pleasure. Rape and sexual violence in a war situation are war crimes. We need to ensure that these women are looked after and that resources are allocated to them. Secondly, I want to raise the situation of the Palestinian refugees. There are already 530 000 refugees in Syria, and over 400 000 of these have been displaced. UNRWA is doing remarkable work with the Palestinian refugees, but it has been stretched to capacity and is finding that its resources are not elastic. We need to ensure that Member States support the work of UNRWA with the Palestinian refugees and I urge Member States to do so."@en1
