"Mr President, cats, dogs and ferrets – well, we no longer have many ferrets in Ireland since we gave up hunting rabbits, but we certainly have dogs and cats. In fact the most famous supporter of the Limerick football and hurling teams is a dog called Ahane. He dresses up in red and white and brings his owner to every match.
I myself am a cat man. I have ten cats, and I take grave exception to Mr Davies’s remark that cats are indifferent. On the contrary, they are very engaging and very cuddly. While you have cats, you will have no rats or mice, so they serve a dual purpose. The rapporteur mentioned that in Europe we have 64 million cats and 66 million dogs. If he had added 10 million barrels of porter, he could have been singing the great Irish song, ‘The Irish Rover’. However, I thank him for his good work and particularly his compliments to the Irish Presidency in moving this report forward."@en1
