"Mr President, I welcome this set of proposals aimed at simplifying existing rules on non-commercial transportation of pet animals. Whilst ensuring that existing and relevant safeguards are maintained, it is imperative to ensure that proper compliance checks are carried out on pet animals moving between Member States and that we remove unwarranted barriers in order to create an efficient system of transportation. I support the recommendations to protect against fraudulent use of pet passports and call for sufficient measures to protect the public from any animal health risks, such as rabies. Given that the United Kingdom has been rabies-free for over a hundred years, it is most pertinent. Overall this is a good, well-reasoned report, and I trust in Member States’ prudence when implementing pet animal transportation procedures. I am confident that the proposals outlined will not erode the current system and that we can continue to transport our pets with minimal fuss and red tape."@en1
