"Mr President, as Bangladesh’s largest trading partner, the EU cannot stand idly by while accidents proliferate in slave-like working conditions. The International Labour Organisation has quoted stark yearly estimates for fatal accidents and work-related diseases in this country.
Voluntary corporate auditing has proved woefully inaccurate, as this building had been certified in the days prior to its collapse. I acknowledge its importance for much-needed economic development, but binding commitments are necessary to prevent further loss of workers’ lives and to guarantee decent working conditions.
As individual consumers cannot verify the conditions under which garments are manufactured, the Commission must ensure manufacturers’ adherence to binding instruments such as the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Agreement and respect for the International Labour Organisation tripartite declaration of principles concerning multilateral enterprises and social policy."@en1
