Níl aon ghá leis sin agus níor cheart cur suas leis. Mr President, leaders around the world have expressed their outrage at what happened in Bangladesh, and rightly so. The Pope has pointed out that the headline figure that grabbed him most was that these workers were being paid EUR 38 per month. He described it as ‘slave labour’, and he is right. He mentioned putting profit before people, and he is right there too. We have an obligation to try to change that. The Commission was right. In the words of my colleague Elisabeth Köstinger: ‘we should be ambassadors for European standards’. We have to work with the Bangladeshi authorities to ensure that high standards prevail. In cases where buildings have been condemned, we have to ensure that the owners cannot force workers to enter them. We will also have to help them look at other accidents that are waiting to happen, so that such incidents can be averted. Finally, we have to compel the big multinational retailers to sign up to a code of conduct and, if they do not, then we should ask the public not to support their goods."@en1
