"Madam President, we have already heard all that has been said about the value of trade between the EU and the US and about what this relationship underpins. It is summed up as ‘jobs and growth’, although some people would like to cast doubt on that. But what this deal really does is underline the progress that has been made, can be made and still needs to be made on global standards and regulatory coherence. The EU and the US can stand together now and make a difference on rules, but in a few more years our chances will be very slim indeed. Rules ending financial risks and rules on keeping environmental and labour standards high are all up for grabs in a discussion between two equal giants in the world. I come from a country that knows something about Euroscepticism, believe you me. When I try to define Euroscepticism, I end up defining it as nationalism, little-mindedness and, indeed, protectionism. We have a Commission that has the competence to negotiate on behalf of the entire EU on the issue of trade. We should have some confidence that we can do that together rather than picking it apart nationally, as it would seem that a few people here today would have us do."@en1
