"Madam President, when we hear the Irish Presidency, the Commissioner and indeed some Members in this House talk about this proposed agreement, you have the impression that they are talking about some sort of Santa Claus for Europe. It is bringing jobs, it is bringing economic growth, we have heard it is bringing prosperity, and all with no visible negatives. I do not believe that these promises are going to be delivered on. I think the example of NAFTA illustrates that point. Instead, what we are going to see with this process of secret negotiations without real public scrutiny – without real political scrutiny – is an attempt to converge labour, environmental and social standards downwards, for example with an attempt by US agri-business to get access to the EU market for GMOs. The leaked draft mandate illustrates the real agenda behind these negotiations. It is one shaped by the interests of big business rather than working people on either side of the Atlantic. That is why I am opposed to the opening of these negotiations and to a possible agreement for a free-trade area. In the draft, you see an attempt to give privileged access to justice for big business. What happened in Canada with NAFTA shows what will happen with this agreement. At the moment, there are USD 2.5 billion worth of claims pending against Canada for imposing regulations in the public interest, including regulations against fracking. A joint struggle across the Atlantic by working people is needed to stop this attempted race to the bottom in the Atlantic."@en1
