"Madam President, I have to say that I disagree with Yannick, but then I usually do disagree with him. I think the Commission – and the Commissioner in question – has always been willing to come to the meetings of the Committee on International Trade and has always kept us fully informed. This is not about individual Members trying to negotiate individually with the United States. It is a huge opportunity for jobs, growth and prosperity, right across the European Union – in financial services, insurance services and the motor industry. I was the rapporteur on the Korean Free Trade Agreement, and the motor industry was very opposed to it. This time, of course, there is a huge opportunity for them. Talking about the motor industry, Commissioner, perhaps one of the most important issues will be a mutual recognition of standards, particularly bearing in mind that in the US standards vary from state to state. Therefore I think it is particularly important that we get that recognition. I do not believe that a car is any more dangerous in the United States than it is in the European Union. We have a set of standards which we should mutually respect. The third point would be the rules of global systems: the WTO. We must, in my opinion, look. We failed in the Doha Round. We are into bilateral rounds, and plurilateral rounds seem to be disappearing. Therefore it is about signalling to the whole of the WTO, and for that matter to the world, that the EU is open for business – and at a crisis time, because there is a crisis within the European Union at the moment. We want to be outward-looking and not protectionist. I feel there is a real risk of that. I would say that Monsieur Hollande’s recent protectionist speech about the way he feels about the trade deal is a great risk. I think we have a unique opportunity. Negotiating on behalf of the European Union, the Commission must have a free hand to get the very best deal it can, and I have total trust in the Commission."@en1
