"Madam President, completing the single market and promoting free trade is exactly what the EU should be doing. We spend far too much time in this place passing new laws which increase costs, destroy jobs and make people’s lives more difficult. We subsidise wind turbines that ruin the countryside and push up energy prices. We have a Working Time Directive which tells people when they can and cannot work. And this week we learn, in the middle of an economic crisis, that the EU wants to regulate the dipping of bread in olive oil. You could not make it up. If the EU concentrated on making its citizens’ lives more prosperous instead of intruding into every aspect of national life, it would be a great deal more popular. I want the EU to do less. I want a new relationship between Britain and the EU, with power repatriated to the Parliament in Westminster, and I want the British people to decide, in a referendum, whether they want to stay in the EU."@en1
