"The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has introduced a programme of measures here that it says will encourage social action, develop social governance and improve participation in the European project. This all sounds very impressive; however, I simply cannot help but see the measures outlined as yet another desperate attempt to clear up a European Union-made mess. Austerity and structural policies implemented here as part of the EMU have clearly undermined both social and labour rights, and have not only resulted in an absolute failure in economic terms, but have also brought about catastrophic social and political results that impact on the EU as a whole. And what we see here is the classic EU reaction – throwing more hard-working taxpayers’ money at the problem in the vain hope that it will go away. I simply cannot stand by and allow UK citizens to fund a programme designed to repair and assist the development of the EMU, a structure that has proved nothing but damaging – economically, politically and socially – to them to date."@en1
