"Madam President, Commission Rehn remains as committed as ever to taking us further down the ‘one-size-fits-all’ austerity path. The Commission persists with an economic policy approach that not only flies in the face of the results on the ground but has also witnessed the crumbling of the intellectual case for austerity in recent times. Of course, we have economic stagnation and unsustainable levels of unemployment as a direct consequence of an approach that ignores how our public debt was made much worse by saving the financial system. The ‘convergence and competitiveness’ instrument based on bilateral contractual arrangements between the Commission and individual Member States will short-circuit democratic accountability and ignore the role of this Parliament. Knowing your economic policy orientation, I believe these contracts will be turned into a bribe for Member States to weaken their workers’ rights, lower salaries and, in the name of competitiveness, impose further cuts on our embattled welfare systems. A social pillar for the economic and monetary union must entail proper resources to offset the eurozone imbalances. True economic governance will not work without solidarity, and this cannot just be a fig leaf to cover the assumption that cuts alone will bring stability."@en1
