"I believe it is important to deal with the challenges of an ageing European population, particularly in this period of economic crisis. The fact that life expectancy is increasing and birth rates are falling means that European demography is changing; over 36% of the population are over the age of 55. This report emphasises the need for a multi-pillar pension approach, calling for a combination of public pensions, complementary pensions and private pensions. I agree that due to the crisis, public pension schemes have been hard hit. I echo the rapporteur’s calls for pension schemes to guarantee decent living standards and to make sure pensioners are not pushed into poverty as a result of the crisis, and I call on the Commission to look seriously at this issue without delay."@en1
