"In light of the UK’s recent hacking scandal and the consequent Leveson Inquiry into media freedom and regulation, the standard of media pluralism across the EU is particularly poignant to me as a London MEP. This report calls for a review and an expansion of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive and while I support the high standards of media freedom that it ultimately promotes, I believe that the proposed review should focus on ensuring the consistent and effective implementation of the existing Directive, rather than dispensing significant new powers to the EU in this area. While ever there is the unfortunate evidence that even within the EU, the basic right of media freedom is not uniformly respected, it is clear that robust monitoring and enforcement, as suggested by this report, is vital. However, we must focus on the task in hand and it is my firm belief that we must consolidate the existing Directive through ensuring its consistent implementation, rather than rushing to extend the influence of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive."@en1
