"I support this report as it outlines a framework for ensuring the protection and promotion of fundamental rights in the context of a free and plural media landscape, particularly in relation to freedom of expression, information and opinion formation. The report was born out of a threat to media independence in some Member States. We must address these issues by incorporating independence, integrity, experience and professionalism into media frameworks. In an age where media plays such an influential role in our daily lives, I believe it is imperative to promote a transparent and autonomous media landscape in all Member States to protect democracy and guarantee freedom of expression. To strengthen democracy, media councils and regulatory bodies need to remain independent from political and government influence. We must also deter conflicts of interest where national news agencies or news monopolies dominate. We can do so through the implementation of intervention mechanisms, especially competition and media rules. Parliament hopes to monitor the situation through a yearly report on media freedom, so as to gain a broader view of the media landscape and act appropriately when violations arise."@en1
