"Mr President, in the UK we are in the middle of a long debate on media freedom. Phone-hacking intrusion and false accusations by journalists have ruined people’s lives. We must ensure that the media meet a higher standard. The challenge is how to deliver press regulation which supports a free press and free speech, while protecting the vulnerable and the innocent.
I agree with David Cameron’s proposal for self-regulation with a minimum of interference from legislation. On that basis, I cannot support any extra interference by the European Union. The EU should resist the temptation to introduce overly complicated and inflexible legislation which would impede, rather than enhance, freedom of the press."@en1
