"As a long-standing supporter of EU enlargement in the Balkans, and the social and economic development of those countries, I welcome Marije Cornelissen’s report into women’s rights in the accession countries. Gender equality should be a prerequisite for EU admission, and therefore it is in these countries’ immediate political interests to take the issue seriously, but more broadly we should always be pushing for greater women’s rights, inside and outside the EU. The report is therefore a timely reminder of some of the deep-seated challenges which remain, in particular regarding human trafficking. This is a real problem in my constituency of London, where last year the Metropolitan Police Trafficked Victims Unit dealt with 147 victims and undertook 91 police operations. It is extremely alarming that 30 % of the victims of cross-border trafficking in humans in the EU are nationals of Balkan countries. But this is an area where the EU can really make a difference, and I strongly believe that we should continue to press for the improvement of women’s rights as part of the accession process."@en1
