"I welcome the adoption of the Cornelissen resolution on women’s rights in the Balkan accession countries. Many countries in the western Balkans that have applied to join the EU have already adopted much of the legislation on gender equality that must be in place before accession can take place, but in many cases these laws have not been effectively implemented, nor is there general awareness among the public of this legislation. Women are under-represented in economic and political decision-making in the Balkan accession countries, as in many western European countries such as my own. I therefore strongly endorse the call on those countries which have not already done so to promote female representation and, where necessary, to apply quotas effectively in political parties and national assemblies, and the call encouraging those countries which have already taken these steps to continue this process in order to enable women to participate in political life and to overcome their under-representation."@en1
