"The North Sea, connected to the historic Thames river in my London constituency, is a prime example of the benefits that regional cooperation can have in relation to renewable energy supplies. However, while this report justly recognises the importance of the continued diversification of energy supplies in order to enhance our energy security, I strongly reject the amendments calling for the introduction of mandatory national targets for 2030. Primarily, I rebuff these amendments on the basis that price competition is fundamental to a well-functioning energy market and an EU-wide support system for renewable energy would undoubtedly jeopardise this. Ultimately, I do not believe that the introduction of mandatory national targets would be the best way of facilitating a European low-carbon economy while keeping industry costs at sustainable levels."@en1
