"I welcome the adoption of the Reul resolution on renewable energy, particularly the first part of Amendment 1 (initiated by the S&D shadow rapporteur, and others) urging the Commission to propose a mandatory EU-wide renewable energy target for 2030, which was adopted by the tightest of margins. However, I was very disappointed that Parliament did not follow-through on the logic of this call by also adopting the second part of Amendment 1 and actually spelling out that we want to see Europe adopt a 40 %-45 % RES target for 2030. Such a target for 2030 would stimulate industrial innovation and competitiveness, create high-quality green jobs and reduce Europe’s high dependency on imported fossil fuels. A renewables share of 45 % is technically and economically feasible and would put Europe on course to ensure we achieve our long-term commitments to tackle climate change. I would urge the Commission to support a binding 40 %-45 % target for 2030 as part of a new 2030 climate and energy package, due in the last quarter of this year, and to include a legislative proposal to this effect in this package."@en1
