"The ECR Members believe that renewable energy sources can contribute to our goals of energy security and diversification, as well as contributing to emissions reduction targets. We do not support calls for an EU-wide support system for renewables as there are serious unanswered questions concerning the financing and organisation of an EU-wide scheme. Most importantly, Article 194 TFEU enshrines a Member State’s right to determine its own energy mix, therefore we cannot support calls for further binding renewable energy targets at EU level that would encroach upon this right. It is also not prudent to commit ourselves legally to a renewable energy target where the investment costs – and, most importantly, the costs for consumers – are unclear and not credible. Since amendments calling for the introduction of mandatory renewable energy targets have been adopted, the ECR Members voted against this report."@en1
