"Mr President, this is yet another of those areas where, when you talk about the need for renewable energy – clean, sustainable energy for the future – many people across the political spectrum would agree it is a good thing in itself, whether or not one’s position on climate change is sceptical or in favour of it. But the important thing to do is to make sure that we deliver it in a way that is also sustainable for our economies.
One of the things many people worry about is this need for binding targets. Binding targets may sound wonderful in themselves but actually, if all they achieve at the end of the day is the de-industrialisation of Europe and the loss of jobs in our constitutencies, how is that sustainable in the long term?
Secondly, can we please make sure we have some joined-up thinking? It is all very well asking for diversity in energy supplies here in Parliament and in the Commission, but what does the Commission do for solar panels from China? It slaps a massive import tariff, making solar panels more expensive and delaying the day when people will adapt and take up clean, sustainable solar energy.
Please can we have some joined-up thinking, then maybe we can have a cleaner future."@en1
