"This legislative report aims to improve the safety of offshore oil and gas platforms and comes as a response to the European Parliament’s call for action following the catastrophic explosion and oil spill at the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico. The rig was carrying out ultra-deepwater, offshore oil drilling and the incident raised a number of concerns about the safety of such activities. Under this Directive, licences for drilling will only be granted to companies who can demonstrate that they have enough money to repair any environmental damage. I am also pleased to see that proposals put forward by Labour MEPs on workers’ rights and the involvement of trade union safety representatives have been included in the final report. Labour MEPs were pleased with the decision to make this legislation a Directive, as a Regulation might have undermined the already strong rules on safety standards enforced by the UK for North Sea operations."@en1
