"The devastating oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 had particular resonance with many of my London constituents, with British Petroleum’s International Headquarters standing tall in St James’ Square, London. This recent environmental tragedy undoubtedly highlighted the need for a review of the EU’s existing framework for offshore oil safety. However, the consequent legislative proposals called for a Regulation rather than a Directive, something which I strongly opposed based on the negative consequences this would have had on the UK’s safety regime. A Regulation would have forced the UK to immediately repeal its established and world-renowned safety system, replacing it with the new EU standards. This would have had disastrous cost implications for the industry and crucially, it would have taken safety officials offsite while they underwent the lengthy process of transposing the legislation into UK law. I was therefore delighted that due to successful pressure from my fellow Conservative MEPs, Parliament has adopted a strong stance in favour of a Directive. I firmly believe that this Directive is a positive step for both oil safety and the environment."@en1
