"Mr President, I welcome the majority vote for this package on regulating the offshore oil and gas sector. I am delighted that the moratorium amendments were rejected by Parliament as they would do immense damage to the industry in Scotland. Oil and gas industries are an essential part of the Scottish economy, but we know to our cost that exploration is not without its risks.
In the UK, since Piper Alpha, we now have one of the toughest safety regimes in the world. The real changes which had been proposed by the European Commission could have undermined the system we already have in place, and that would have been unacceptable in my view. UK MEPs have made clear since the start of this process that what we need to see from the rest of the EU is action to bring other countries up to the high standards we have set at home as a result of that Piper Alpha disaster. Imposing new rules from Brussels would have meant breaking down the established safguards and starting again. The vote today is a victory for common sense which will help ensure that safety standards are raised around Europe."@en1
