"Deindustrialisation has sadly been the key economic theme in Western Europe over the past forty years. This report seeks to offer recommendations regarding cohesion policy and how it could best assist the process of regeneration. I am particularly pleased to note that the report goes beyond looking at the problem in terms of funding and instead stresses the need for a greater push on competitiveness. There is an emphasis on the need to support sectors such as research and innovation, the digital economy, as well as the cultural and creative industries. London has been hugely successful in adapting its economy to these areas, providing thousands of much needed jobs, and I welcome the call to support this. The report does, however, suggest that the optimal way of meeting this challenge would be via the development of EU-level employment strategies. I do not believe that this would offer the required solution and could have the potential to damage competitiveness rather than improve it. Whilst the report offers some valuable insights, on balance I am unable to support its recommendations."@en1
