"The Report on Regional Strategies for Industrial Areas in the European Union highlights a fundamental need to get our economies moving again. European industry amounts to 16 % of EU GDP and it is therefore vital we revitalise this sector if Europe is to pull itself out of the current economic difficulties. Europe needs to be at the forefront of modern industrial development and it needs to be competitive. I voted for this report because it recognises that the amount allocated to regions like Northern Ireland is not the sole imperative. It acknowledges that an effective policy framework is needed which focuses on competitiveness. If businesses are to flourish, a business-friendly tax regime is needed to encourage investment. The report also promotes ‘smart specialisation’– it calls for industrial areas to focus on their natural and man-made assets before funding is applied. It also promotes a modern industrial strategy, moving away from subsidy and instead, through the use of Structural Funds, aims to cultivate a favourable business culture and an entrepreneurial spirit amongst young people. It is vital we encourage an innovative spirit in young people and I know these measures can be of great benefit to Northern Ireland."@en1
