"Mr President, all countries face this challenge, but when all the old industries die, how do they meet the challenge to make sure they create jobs in the newer industries, such as technology, retail and services industries? It is all very well us having this discussion in the European Parliament at a top-down level, but sometimes you have to look at the policies in individual countries. Let me just give you one example. Last year I was invited to Italy to speak at a conference on reindustrialisation, and the reason this conference was held was because the British Gas Group had spent EUR 250 million and 11 years on a project in Brindisi to try and build a liquefied natural gas terminal, and after 11 years of bureaucracy, it simply gave up. My local Italian hosts were aghast. They said, ‘what is it about our country that we have stopped this investment that would have created jobs?’ I think that is the question you have to ask. Not here in the European Parliament, but in all regions and towns and cities. If you want to encourage investment in jobs, make sure you have politicians in place who are open to business and are not protectionist."@en1
