"Mr President, it goes without saying that one of the fundamental principles of a democratic society is freedom of the press. I think we would all agree with that. That is very important. Also, of course, within the European Union we want to have the highest possible standards in every one of the Member States. Of course there are different ways in which the freedom of the press is manipulated. Sometimes we hear stories of the owners of media outlets controlling the content and of editors having maybe too much control over individual journalists in the press, radio and TV, and all these issues are important for us to discuss. But then there is also the fact that with freedom comes responsibility, in particular in relation to the reporting of what happens here in the European Union. Some media outlets are partial (to say the least) and unprofessional and sometimes report in a very negative way. We need to have fair play and the highest possible standards both in the freedom and in the application of that freedom in order that the press may have the authority and the respect it deserves."@en1
