I think most Europeans would say that we are in an economic crisis and that we need to get out of it. We have to become more competitive and we need to reduce energy costs in particular. For too long we have depended on imported fossil fuels from third countries. This is a proposal on how we can partly deal with that. Prior to this we discussed the role of renewables. I think – certainly with technology improving year by year – we can now economically explore oil and gas opportunities off our coasts and do so in an environmentally-friendly way.
The Commissioner mentioned – and very rightly so – public opinion. We need to bring public opinion with us. We have a role to play in that, but so do the companies who will be doing the exploring. If we do that, then we can have energy security in Europe."@en1
