"Mr President, for 12 years the interrogation practices and the violations of the Geneva Convention at Guantánamo have contradicted America’s profession of the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Of the 166 prisoners still there, only three have been convicted of any crime, and over half have been cleared for release. Dick Cheney’s words that they are living in the tropics, that they are well-fed, that they have got everything they could possibly want, are an affront to human decency.
The closure of what Amnesty International has described as ‘the Gulag of our times’ was promised when Obama came to office. Four years later, in an act of collective despair, most prisoners are on hunger strike. The time has come for America to remove this stain on its moral integrity. We stand side by side with America in the fight against terror; we deplore the Boston bombings; but we appeal to our friends across the Atlantic to see that this injustice will serve to recruit – not to deter – the enemies of freedom."@en1
