"I voted in favour of the amended proposal but against the legislative resolution. The dismantling of EU-flagged ships in non-OECD countries has been banned since 1998 However, EU ships are continuing to be dismantled outside OECD countries through the ‘beaching’ method. This causes significant damage to the environment and health. The Commission proposes to reduce the negative affects of the recycling of EU-flagged ships without creating unnecessary economic burdens. In Wales the protection of the environment and recycling are key priorities so this is important. I voted against the legislative resolution as this will allow the European Parliament to start negotiations with the Irish Presidency for a first-reading agreement and achieve the best result possible."@en1
