"I voted in favour of this report, which assesses the effect of the financial crisis on human rights. The impact of the economic uncertainty of the last few years has been particularly pronounced in less developed countries, where a lack of resources has led to a general deterioration in social and economic rights. With around 1.2 billion people globally living in extreme poverty, it is vital to assess how the human rights records of the world's most vulnerable countries have been affected in order to devise constructive solutions to alleviate these problems. Political rights have also been affected latterly, as there is a tendency for some governments to restrict freedom of expression in the face of growing discontent and hardship. For these reasons, it is right that the EU does all it can to uphold human rights in countries where they are most threatened."@en1
