"Madam President, like other members of this House, I believe that the Citizens’ Initiative does have the potential to create a public space in which citizens can enter into dialogue with the institutions. I think it also provides an opportunity for citizens of different countries to join together to raise transnational interests. And, unlike Mr Batten, I believe there is a European demos and this could contribute to that European demos. I was encouraged by the Commissioner’s contribution this morning. It thought she showed a clear commitment to the Citizens’ Initiative, and we know from our history that she is personally committed to it. So I therefore ask the Commission to do four things. I ask it to press ahead with its attempts to simplify and improve the technology and to continue to look for a way of to introduce a centralised online platform for the Citizens’ Initiative. I was pleased to hear the Commissioner say that she will discuss with the UK and Irish authorities the possibility of lowering the threshold for participation of citizens from these Member Sates living outside of their country, and finally, Parliament and the Commission have to do more to inform the citizens of the existence of this initiative. Together we have to work with the Member States to get buy-in from them, which clearly does not exist at the present time."@en1
