"Mr President, the protection and preservation of the Arctic region, in harmony with its population, is absolutely vital. We must at all times recognise the need to protect the indigenous Arctic communities and to ensure that their concerns and their issues are clearly understood by the European Union. I must say that, every time I visit the Arctic, I am constantly reminded that it was the European Parliament which opposed the sale of their sealskins, which used to make up a vital part of their income. The EU must promote sustainable use of resources in a way that does not compromise the Arctic environment and will benefit local communities. In my capacity as the European Parliament’s representative on the standing committee of the parliamentarians of the Arctic region, I have been attending regular meetings with my colleagues from Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States. The standing committee has been at the forefront of international discussions in this area. The high-level cooperation will continue at our next meeting, which will take place in June in Svalbard in Norway. I have, on several occasions, raised the need for the EU to become a permanent observer of the Arctic Council, and I am very grateful to those members who are supportive of this. I welcome the recent application from the Commission, and I am hopeful that it will be positively received."@en1
