"Kosovo is the largest per capita recipient of EU financial aid in the world. Between 2007 and 2011, EUR 1.2 billion of EU aid was spent on efforts to tackle corruption and organised crime in the country. However, as the ECA revealed last year, these efforts have proved futile. Furthermore, the country is the second poorest in Europe and with 45% of its workforce unemployed, the economic situation does not look set to change in the near future.
Bearing these points in mind, it is fair to ask, why must we persist in throwing money – specifically EU taxpayers’ money – at what is arguably a hopeless cause? If Kosovo is integrated into the EU, the amount of taxpayers’ money we gift them will rise – and at a time when Member States’ citizens are struggling to pay their basic bills, can we justify this additional expenditure? We wish Kosovo well and would like to see the country develop in its own time but we cannot afford to help countries who need so much financial support if they do not help themselves: allowing them into the EU is too high a financial burden for the UK and other Member States."@en1
