"The great Margaret Thatcher, whom we sadly lost last week, once said, ‘Any woman who understands the problems of running a home will be nearer to understanding the problems of running a country.’ Like the Iron Lady, I understand how to run a home and I would like to offer some advice to those running the EU. Firstly, we need value for money. We are debating the budgets of EU institutions which have long since failed to serve a useful purpose, such as the Committee of the Regions or the EESC. Secondly, we need to make sure that we are not paying for the same thing twice. The 52 EU agencies are costing EU taxpayers over EUR 3 billion and many of them are guilty of duplication. There are two EU agencies dealing with training, two focusing on working conditions, two agencies working on food safety and two agencies dealing with fundamental rights. And finally, we must make sure that the figures add up. The error rate – money misused, misappropriated or inadequately accounted-for – has risen for the third year in a row and now stands at 3.9 %. No good housewife would ever accept a muddled, misspent and monstrous budget like this."@en1
